I had Windows 7 on the PC originally, did a free upgrade to Windows 10 way back. I don’t know what my original Windows 7 product key was, and it only shows the last 5 digits of my key on the Activation page in Settings. It does show my product ID though. Try again later. I checked my device listings, and it seems there are two machines named “alex” on my list. The other “alex” says “MS-7B87” underneath, which a quick search shows is my current motherboard.

I have an HP laptop with Windows 10 Home. I downloaded the upgrade, installed it, and it was working fine. Now I’m am getting a message to activate Windows. I did not receive an email with a new product key nor did the installer request a product key when I installed the Windows 10 upgrade.

I tried calling the support number, the associate could not look up my order number to help with my issues, 20 minutes on hold. He then gave me a different number to call and transferred me. I was on hold for 30 minutes and then gave up.

I found this link when I searched the error code. I need someone to send me a product key for my product purchase. Either email it to me or drop it into my Microsoft account on the secure portal and I can pick it up there. Regardless of how you choose to resolve this, someone needs to get me the product key for the software I purchased.

You are correct, even though the upgrade from the MS store said Windows 10 Pro, the edition in the activation function is listed as Enterprise. I followed the link you provided and recommendation to try the generic key. I applied the generic key and the activation function is now reporting that Windows is activated. Thank you very much for that, I was concerned I’d have to roll back this install and it would negatively impact my setup.

Next steps, I have activation, however, I don’t think Microsoft wants its customers sitting on a generic key. I’d assume they’d prefer to have a legitimate digital license applied to coincide with the customer purchase. With that, please advise, shall I stick with the generic key and close out this support request or would MS prefer a follow up with the appropriate fix with a digital license? Meaning, I wait to hear back on the appropriate fix.

You can also try applying the Pro Default Version Product Key which some have reported works to change it to the correct pro version so it activates with the DIgital License applied during Upgrade. Sandra, not to worry. There are NO Product Keys for DL’s, only just the one generic version key which is the same as when you install Windows without inserting a key – which you’d do if you ever reinstall.

I’m glad the Generic Key worked. I was told that’s what Support is doing too. I’m sorry they didn’t fix you up earlier but I think you have to tell them what fix is needed before they can apply it.
